Having James Benning and Mike Hoolboom as invited directors, placing in dialogue films from different moments in their lives, and a small theme focus, New Visions continues to be a section experimenting with cinema, its history, its strategies and its vanishing points. “Transmission, Imagined Territories” summarises one of the festival’s lines of force: to film is to confront oneself with other possible worlds. Jorge Cramez, Manuel Botelho and Rui Simões present works that discuss just that, given the concrete nature of their practices. Evidence (1935), the first surveillance film, by the London Police, is the starting point for a programme on evidence and forensic image. Actor Jean-François Stévenin will present restored prints of the three films he directed.
