A brief black-and-white opener reminds viewers that civilization in Mesopotamia dates back to 3000 BCE, and people still live in floating houses in the Tigris and Euphrates swampland. From this ancient world of reeds and waterfowl (destroyed in large part by Saddam Hussein’s regime), Zaman is forced to take a journey to urban modernity. Amer Alwan shot the film in January 2003, just before the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime.
