In 1988, D. A. Pennebaker and his partner, Chris Hegedus, followed electropop British band Depeche Mode during their American tour, Music for the Masses. At the same time, another film crew followed a group of teenagers who had won a contest, travelling across the country to California to attend the band’s 101st concert. Now, 30 years later, we celebrate that moment with a film that was the forerunner of MTV’s reality shows.
