Doclisboa - the whole world fits in Lisbon

Doclisboa 2005 - The Lisbon International Documentary Film Festival - is a competitive festival exclusively dedicated to the documentary, open to a range of genres and trends, encouraging new ways of thinking, of seeing the world and of communicating.

In 2004, the second Doclisboa festival took up the renewed interest of Portuguese audiences in the documentary film. Though to a somewhat lesser extent than in other European countries, the documentary film has made something of a comeback in commercial cinemas.

The success of Doclisboa 2004 was an expressive demonstration of this renewed audience interest in the documentary. Over nine days Doclisboa managed to bring a record audience of 13,500 to Culturgest. Its aim was the creation of new audiences and developing an educational programme for young people.

No other cinematographic event in Lisbon in 2004 succeeded in attracting such large audiences or such wide media coverage. The documentary film became the talk of the town, and a new awareness of its enormous wealth, diversity and potential was created.

At Doclisboa 2005, between the 15th and the 23 rd of October, the recipe will be repeated but augmented with more films, more sections and more invited guests. The general idea is to bring to Lisbon, first hand, the best of contemporary production, combining the showing of recent films both in competition and special sessions devoting more time to themed retrospectives.

The majority of the Doclisboa sessions will be complemented by debates with directors, critics and specialists.

In its third edition Doclisboa will continue to promote the Portuguese documentary to Portuguese audiences and seek to establish its link to the international documentary festival circuit.
