Cinema São Jorge is hosting the HEART BEAT section with three films by Les Blank, which includes Dizzy Gillespie. It will also be hosting the PORTUGUESE and INTERNATIONAL SHORT and FEATURE-LENGTH FILM COMPETITION together with Cinema City Alvalade. Culturgest will be screening Eric Baudelaire's film, The Ugly One and The Unknown Known, by Errol Morris. The INVESTIGATION section will be featured in Cinema City Alvalade, as well as the SPECIAL PROGRAMME with Un Voyageur, by Marcel Ophüls.

Included in the PORTRAITS section, which presents biography films, The Unknown Known, a mesmerizing portrait of Donald Rumsfeld, one of the key architects of the Iraq War. Rumsfeld takes the stage as the writer/performer of his own life, reading selections from his "snowflakes", out of hundreds of his own memorandums.

On a beach littered with cans washed up from the sea, Lili and Michel meet. The deep voice of a Japanese narrator recounts his own experience of 27 clandestine years fighting alongside the Palestinians as a member of the Japanese Red Army. On July 24th, 2012, Zhu Rikun travelled to Xinyu, Jiangxi Province, to cheer Liu Ping and two other independent candidates and human right activists. At 12 o'clock at night, some policemen entered their room and started the so-called "room inspection", and so begins the camera roll. Cha Fang is competing in the INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION SHORT FILMS category.

Europe seems like a vague entity. It continues unattainable for Kelly, who sees it with disdain. She replicates the destiny to the camera: the wise life in Peru, the clandestine life in the French Guiana, the family, and the loved one... Kelly dangles between three continents, three languages and three worlds. Tangier is depicted in fragments. Kelly is up for competition in the INTERNATIONAL FEATURE-LENGTH FILM category.

"This show was created by Cornucópia theatre group when, in 2010, the financing for theatres received a huge cutback. The Battle of Karbala took place on October 10, 680 in Karbala (Iraq), between the forces of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph and Hussein, the grandson of prophet Muhammad. This battle is central to Shi'a Muslim belief in which the martyrdom of Hussein is mourned by an annual commemoration, Ashura. Köken Ergun competes in the INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION SHORT FILMS category.

Catania, Sicily. In the heart of the working class neighborhood lies a vast and lawless territory where makeshift stables can be found. One of them is owned by Concetto - aka "il farmacista" - a man respected and feared, with reputation in the world of clandestine horse racing. Kutchi Vahan Pani Wala (From Gulf to Gulf to Gulf) Shaina Anand, Ashok Sukumaran|
(CAMP collective members)
The film, included in the INVESTIGATIONS unit, is a result of four years of dialogue, friendship and exchange between CAMP and a group of sailors on the Gulf of Kutch. Their travels, and those of co-seafarers from Pakistan and Southern Iran, through the Persian and Aden Gulfs show us a world cut into many pieces. We follow the physical crossings made by these people who also make videos.

In Ali and Avi's joint adventure, in the journey they take to their own communal histories, the Middle East of yore - the one in which they could coexist effortlessly - resurfaces with ease. Cinema São Jorge will be screening Frederick Wiseman's At Berkeley. It will also be hosting, in conjunction with Cinema City Alvalade, the competition of Portuguese Short Films and the
International Short and Feature Films competition. The artwork of the Portuguese directors João Pedro Rodrigues and Miguel Gomes, in tribute to the director Paulo Rocha, will be taking place at Culturgest's Grand Auditorium, while at the Forum Debates the panel will be discussing the Independent Distribution.

At Berkeley shows how one of the most important American universities is managed and advocates the complex relation between all of its stakeholders - the students, the university, its managers, the graduates, the city of Berkley, the State of California and the federal government. Exhibited in a one-time only session, the work debuted at this year's Venice Film Festival and is incorporated in the SPECIAL PROGRAMME 6.

The film documents a series of activities throughout a year, taking place in a Guimarães prison and is described through the motto of Memórias de Cárcere (The Memories of Cárcere), by Camilo Castelo Branco. It highlights the barrier between an observational documentary and its triggered mechanisms. The director will be present in both sessions.

Composed of three parts, the video congregates different materials in a clashing montage (photographs of churches architecture, internet images of pop performances and images of a renowned fire at Woolworths department store in 1979), creating video installations that stray between social history and fantasy. Elizabeth Price is the winner of the Turner Prize 2012, and this piece is currently exhibited at Carpe Diem.

Culturgest's Grand Auditorium receives La Batalla de Chile I and II, by Patricio Guzmán, as well as the short films by Sara Vanagt and Harun Farocki. The PORTUGUESE and the INTERNATIONAL contest of both short and feature films will be exhibited at the Cinema São Jorge and the Cinema City Alvalade. Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa will launch the PASSAGES unit with the art installations of Camille Henrot, Elizabeth Price and Hartmut Bitomsky. The film Une Feuille dans le Vent, by Jean-Marie Teno will be one of the special sessions of this day.

La Batalla de Chile I (The Batte of Chile: Part 1) Patricio Guzmán, Chile/France/Cuba, 1975

Allende places a transformation into action to revolutionize social and political conditions in order to modernize the State and obstruct poverty. Traditionalists put together a series of strikes while the Whitehouse smothers them economically. This documentary is inserted in the section 1973 - 2013. THE CHILEAN MILITARY COUP D'ÉTAT: 40 YEARS LATER and will receive the presence of the director of the film on the 30th of October.

Une Feuille dans le Vent (Leaf in the Wind), Jean-Marie Teno, France/Cameroon, 2013

Ernest Ouandie, a hero in the fight for the independence of Cameroon, was executed in 1971 leaving behind Ernestine, a daughter that he never met. In 2004 she confessed to Jean-Marie Teno her tragic life story in a live recording. Six years later Jean-Marie discovered that Ernestine had committed suicide. This news led her to explore the recordings of 2004 once again. The story is included in the SPECIAL PROGRAMME 1 that traces personal history and the destiny of the nation for women to whom the encounter between memories and words are a vital and generous act. Director will be present on the 26th of October.

Doclisboa's second day will be inaugurated with the PASSAGES unit, which creates the bridge between the documentary and contemporary art. Museu da Eletricidade displays an installation of 14 episodes of Berlin Alexanderplatz, by Rainer W. Fassbinder. On the 25th of October the HEART BEAT unit will be opening with Olho Nu, a portrait of Ney Matogrosso's life. The competition for national and international short film and feature film will also be commencing on this day.

Joel Pizzini portrays the life and masterpiece of Ney Matogrosso. Olho Nu reveals the man
behind the character. The film about the life of the Brazilian musician opens the HEART
BEAT unit, which makes the connection between the documentary to the music and the
performing arts.

During the Czar's regime Mohsen Makhmalbaf was a 17-year-old belonging to the guerrilla.
He and a girl attack a policeman to disarm him and the girl disappears. Twenty years later
Makhmalbaf makes a film about it and discovers that the policeman fell in love with the
guerrilla girl and looked for her all these years.
