The day begins with the second session of the INTERNATIONAL DEBATE PASSAGES. Sylvain George is lecturing a MASTERCLASS to be held at Faculdade de Belas Artes. In the evening Doclisboa and Alambique are screening the film The Stone Roses: Made of Stone, by Shane Meadows, which unveils exclusive material from the mythical British pop band from the 80's - at Lux Frágil.

Kutchi Vahan Pani Wala (From Gulf to Gulf to Gulf), Shaina Anand e Ashok Sukumaran

INVESTIGATION // NEW TALENT

The film is a result of four years of dialogue, friendship and exchange between CAMP and a group of sailors from the Gulf of Kutch. Their travels, and those of co-seafarers from Pakistan and Southern Iran, through the Persian and Aden Gulfs show us a world cut into many pieces. We follow the physical crossings made by these people who also make videos.

It took Camões roughly 20 years to write the 8816 verses that compose Os Lusíadas. António Fonseca dedicated four years of his life to make them his own. This film documents the year that preceded the final presentation of the spoken Os Lusíadas on June 9 2012, in Guimarães, European Capital of Culture, in which Camões' verses were recited and heard.

At Mahatma Gandhi's invitation, Bhimrao Ambedkar drafted India's Constitution. But caste discrimination proved intransigent. In 1997 an Ambedkar statue at Ramabai Colony in Mumbai was desecrated. As angry Dalits [untouchables] gathered, police opened fire, killing 10. 14 years have passed since the shots rang out at Ramabai. Jai Bhim Comrade documents them.

Ernest Ouandie, hero of the Cameroonian independence struggle, was executed by the Cameroonian authorities in 1971, leaving behind a daughter he never met - Ernestine. In 2004, she confided her tragic life story before my camera. Six years later, I learned that Ernestine had chosen to end her own life. This tragic news took me back to the 2004 recordings.

Archival images intertwine with fragments from today, and the testimony of that which was and that which might have been blend together with what is.

Set over four days of unrelenting wind and rain in a remote village high up in the Nafpaktia Mountains in Greece, the film follows the lives of two shepherd families struggling for survival. Paxnis had already foreseen the dire straits the country would be facing and is slowly sinking into despair. Giorgos is weighed down by debts and drinks to forget.

Between March and September 1973 left wing and right wing confront each other everywhere: on the streets, factories, courts, universities, parliament and media. Nixon sponsors the major strikes and fosters social chaos. On September 4 nearly a million people parades before Allende. A week later Pinochet bombs the Palace of the Government.

Masterclass Sylvain George

Following the release of his latest film, Vers Madrid (The Burning Bright)!, at Doclisboa in 2012, Sylvain George returns to Lisbon to present excerpts of his work in a open masterclass. His works have an outstanding aesthetic and political power, and are based on the thesis by Walter Benjamin. It will be a good occasion to understand work methods and top aesthetic and plastic quality propositions through the use of small cameras and of a crew that is composed solely by the director himself (working as cameraman, editor and producer simultaneously).

The Pervert's Guide to Ideology, will be screened at Voz do Operário with special guests Daniel Oliveira and Pedro Mexia. La Batalla de Chile I, by Patricio Guzmán, opens the first day of Doclisboa in Almada.

INTERNATIONAL DEBATE PASSAGES

The debate begins with the opening of the International Debate Passages. These year the debate continues to challenge the passages between film and contemporary art. Christa Blumlinger, Françoise Parfait and Louise Wilson will be the speakers and will discuss the films of David Claerbout and Chris Marker on the context of the Archive.

Focus: Abounaddara
CINEMA OF URGENCY

 

A former documentary producing company, founded in Damascus in 2010, Abounaddara is (as off April 2011, a month after the beginning of the Syrian war) a collective of anonymous directors whose work is carried out within the urgency framework - urgency to intervene, to film the daily life of a country at war, and to be an alternative to the traditional media linked to the government of Bashar Al-Assad. These films are made on the voices and images of the people and on its variety (from interviews to video clips). They are the outcome (in progress) of one of the most singular type of contemporary cinematographic practices within the urgency framework - cinema as weapon and shield.

An Iranian filmmaker and his son travel to Israel to investigate a world religion with around 7 million followers, which originated in Iran about a hundred and seventy years ago. The father finds similarities between its teachings and the ideas promoted by Mandela and Gandhi. But the son strongly believes that all religions tend to bring about destruction.

Choices are hard to make; even more so if you're a Palestinian refugee in the camp of Yarmouk, in Syria.

Allende implements a social and political programme to modernise the State and to stop poverty. Conservatives organise a whole series of wildcat strikes while the White House asphyxiates Chile economically. Allende's coalition however wins 43.4% of the votes. From that moment on the right wing strategy would be a political coup.
