Agnès Varda at doclisboa
2011/10/15

Agnès Varda will be in Lisbon for doclisboa 2011, to present her latest film Agnès de ci de là Varda (Episode 1/b Berlin - Boston - Marker - Nantes - Portugal), a world premiere, on October 26th, 9.30pm, at Culturgest's Large Auditorium. One episode of the five chronicles filmed and commented by Varda during her trips in the last two years.

With her small camera, she films ordinary people, contemporary artists and film directors. In Portugal, Manuel de Oliveira talks about the guardian angel, and walks like Chaplin... Full of fantasy and charm, this is cinema signed Agnès de ci de là Varda.

A fabulous double bill in which we will also screen Peter von Bagh's (President of the Jury) Sodankylä Forever: the Yearning for the First Cinema Experience. A collage of filmmakers' testimonies throughout the years at the Midnight Sun Film Festival. With Jean Rouch, Agnès Varda, Manoel de Oliveira, Samuel Fuller, John Boorman, Emir Kusturica, Jim Jarmusch, Stanley Donen, Milos Forman, Abbas Kiarostami, Jerzy Skolimowski, Wim Wenders, and Jafar Panahi, among others.

Program doclisboa 2011: festival sections
2011/10/07

doclisboa wants to encourage portuguese production and the discovery of new filmmakers, wants to aim for the future of the documentary scene. We have selected seventeen first films, four of them belonging to the Portuguese Competition - section composed by six feature and mid-length films.
This year, a portuguese film will compete with foreign films in the International Competition - It's the Earth Not the Moon, by Gonçalo Tocha, a film about the Corvo island and its inhabitants. Vol Spécial, by Fernand Melgar, Territoire Perdu, by Pierre-Yves Vandeweerd, Sonnensystem, by Thomas Heise and Tahrir, by Stefano Savona, are some of the films selected for this section.

Investigations section observes some relevant subjects like the Guantanamo prison - You Don't Like the Truth - 4 Days inside Guantánamo, by Luc Côté and Patricio Henríquez - the palestinians in Isarel - Rechokim, by Ruthie Shatz and Adi Barash - and also the story of a potential USA presidential candidate invloved in a sex scandal - Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, by Alex Gibney.
Another well known section, New Visions, shows some excepcional films like Aterro do Flamengo, by Alessandra Bergamaschi, a film discovered at the It's All True Film Festival, and Our Man, by Pedro Costa.
Heartbeat will cover all music genres from hip-hop, to classical music, jazz, pop and punk rock. A spotlight to two homages this year: Richard Leacock in Monterey Pop and Thomaz Farkas in Pixinguinha (both directors passed away this year).
During the festival, guest directors will attend both the screenings and the daily debates with the public. Among them are Frederick Wiseman, Ross McElwee, Fernand Melgar, Thomas Heise and many other guests.
