At the end of the 1950s, the Chinese government condemned thousands of citizens - dissidents or critics of the regime - to forced labour camps. Deported for re-education in the Gobi Desert, thousands of miles away from their families, they encountered conditions of absolute destitution, backbreaking physical labour, and unrelentingly extreme climate.
