| The Ganges is the sacred river of India. Varanasi is the city par excellence from which to get to know the river. Shot in black and white, this documentary by Gianfranco Rosi (director of Below Sea Level – International Competition), marked an era. It is a film that gets away from the tourist clichés and brings religiosity to its most mundane dimension: funerals, ablutions and rules of life. Boatman Gopal Maji is our travel guide and comments with some irony on the whirlwind of life and death that surrounds him. |
