Petropolis – Aerial Perspectives on the Alberta Tar Sands
Peter Mettler
Canada, 2009, 43’
INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION - MID-LENGTH
Shot primarily from a helicopter, “Petropolis” offers an unparalleled view of the world's largest industrial, capital and energy project. Canada's tar sands are an oil reserve the size of England where crude oil is extracted from underneath unspoiled wilderness. This requires a massive industrialized effort with far-reaching impacts on the land, air, water, and climate. This landscape assumes its specificity and its awkwardness in the aerial images that make the film.
