“Not long ago I had the opportunity to travel through Bahia. I went to Cairu, a small lost city that, according to some, was one of the first cities founded by the Portuguese in Brazil. In Cairu a monk told me the story of Fradique Mendes, a famous Portuguese adventurer who had settled there in the 19th century. Forced to flee in haste, Fradique left this manuscript behind, that according to the monk was a reflection on the origins of Brazilian society and addressed social matters: the excluded, slavery, and Amerindian struggles.”
