HEART BEAT
Standing ovation at the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes 2010, “Benda Bilili!” (which means beyond appearances) is a project developed over five years with the street musicians of Kinshasa (Congo), who for the first time record an album (the rehearsals and some recordings were made at the city’s zoo!) and go on a triumphant international tour. Some of the most virtuous musicians, like little Roger (who is 13 in the beginning of the story) build their own instruments – in Roger’s case, the “Santongé”, a one-string guitar made with a small twisted wooden bow fixed to a tin!
