Moving Stills - Photography, Photographers and Documentary Film

By giving me the absolute past of the pose (aorist), the photograph tells me death in the future. What pricks me is the discovery of this equivalence. In front of the photograph of my mother as a child, I tell myself: she is going to die. I shudder over a catastrophe, which has already occurred. Whether or not the subject is already dead, every photograph is this catastrophe. Roland Barthes

Karins Ansikte / Karin's Face

Ingmar Bergman

14' / Sweden / 1983

Leading off with images of the face of Ingmar Bergman's mother Karin, this film shows photographs from old albums over a period of several decades. It validates the value of looking at old images of family members to gain insight into one's self.

On The Pond

Philip Hoffman

9' / USA / 1978

A beautifully paced mixture of family photographs and dramatic reconstruction interwoven into a narrative that creates objective distance. Unsentimental and evocative study of family, perfectly pitched in its emotional resonance. Michael O'Pray

The director will be at the 29th of October screening.

Karine

Robert Cahen

9' / France / 1976

Two hundred photographs of a child taken between birth and her sixth birthday, filmed and edited without respecting any chronology, retrace this history of "irreversible change". Robert Cahen

Appearances

22' / The Netherlands / 2000

In my parents' photo albums I used to look intensely at all those faces, trying to transfer myself into the life they lived, which of course I failed at. All of them gone I tried to bring them back a little by getting close into their images. Barbara Meter

The director will be at the 29th of October screening.

Kurashi Ato / Vestige of Life

Maki Satake

12' / Japan / 2009

This work combines traces of the past and the present, merging in a patchwork. Personal memories of the author create delicate connections and contrasts between old pictures and present images, indoor and outdoor, dialogues echoes, glances, precious life traces.

Cyclopean 3D: Life with a Beautiful Woman

Ken Jacobs

47' / USA / 2012

Intimate photographs, which tell of family ties and friendships: a moving expression of the season of New American Cinema. "Animations of home stereo-pairs from the 60s on, cyclopean because the 3D can also be seen with one eye." Ken Jacobs
