The Quest of the Schooner Creoula, by Portuguese director André Valentim Almeida, and Doclisboa’s choice to Doc Alliance Section 2014, was today awarded with the Selection Award, announced today during Doc Brunch at Cannes Film Festival.
The director was present during the delivery of the award, together with the representants of the seven Alliance member film festivals. It is the second consecutive time that this award is delivered to a Portuguese film.
This year, were part of the jury: Vasco Câmara (Público, Portugal), Hannah Pilarczyk (Der Spiegel, Germany), Kim Skotte (politiken, Denmark), Christian Jungen (NZZ am Sonntag, Switzerland), Isabelle Regnier (Le Monde, France), Piotr Czerkawski (Poland) and Kamila Bohackova (Czech Republic).
Besides the Portuguese film, were in the competition the following films: Bloody Beans, by Narimane Mari (Fid Marseille’s choice), The Reunion, by Anna Odell (nominated by CPH:DOX), Mundial. The Highest Stakes, by Michal Bielawski (chosen by Planete Doc Warsaw), Striplife, by Nicola Grignani, Alberto Mussolini, Luca Scaffidi, Valeria Testagrossa, Andrea Zambelli (nominated by Visions du Réel), The Great Night, by Petr Hátle (Jihlava IDFF’s choice) and The Special Need (chosen by German DOK Leipzig).
Regarding the film, André Valentim Almeida says: “The Quest of the Schooner Creoula is my arrival to adult age in cinema, that moment in which, by the end of the film, I don’t want to make it all over again and burn it with fire.”
The Quest of the Schooner Creoula was awarded with the Honourable Mention of the New Talent Award Portuguese competition and with the Schools Award at Doclisboa’13.
