Documentary filmmaking and ethnographic practice

Tiago Pereira launches a debate on documentary filmmaking and ethnographic practice, possible links and incompatibilities, having as a starting point his film … because … because I am not the 21st Century’s Giacometti. This is not an original debate. To discuss the relationship between art and science is almost as old as “art” and “science” themselves. We will not discuss “beauty” and “scientific truth”, but we will seek to deepen possible connections, not to mention all that separates both narratives. In the debate, we shall discuss narrative strategies and their social, political and cultural implications; professional identities and their forms of representation and results; and public impact, namely in the communities of practitioners and in scientific communities.

With the participation of Tiago Pereira (director of the film), Catarina Alves Costa (anthropologist and director), Jorge Pereirinha Pires and José F. Pinheiro (authors and directors of Brava Dança), and anthropologist Pedro Félix (researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for the Study of Music and Dance).
