Surviving Images / Imagens Sobreviventes
Moving Stills - Photography, Photographers and Documentary Film
On one side, there is movement, the present, presence; on the other, immobility, the past, a certain absence. On one side, the consent of illusion; on the other, a quest for hallucination. Here, a fleeting image, one that seizes us in its flight; there, a completely still image that cannot be fully grasped. On this side, time doubles life; on that, time returns to us brushed by death. Raymond Bellour My Stills 1952-2002 David Perlov 58' / Israel / 2003 Perlov's last film is formed as a triptych: from a journey to the roots of the image, to the stills he took always from the same spot: his breakfast table at a Tel Aviv café, following Renoir's words: "Finding the classical eternity just around the corner."
Ulysse / Ulysses Agnès Varda 22' / France / 1982 Varda returns to a striking photograph she took in 1954. This autobiographical film is a haunting meditation on the elusive nature of memory as well as a fascinating introduction to Varda's photography and its influence on her filmmaking.
