A selection of some of the best documentaries from around the world, produced in 2010-2011. Some films already won several awards while others will be screened for the first time.
The International Competiton divides in two different categories:
- Feature and Mid-Length - over 40 minutes
- Shorts - less than 40 minutes

A selection showing some of the best documentaries produced and/or directed in Portugal) during last year. Most of the films are world premieres.

Investigations Competition
Films that seek to explore both present and past critical moments. By revealing something new, by positioning themselves before the facts, these works can interfere with reality or enrich our historical perception.
New Visions
This parallel section seeks to showcase daring and innovative works on the border between fiction and documentary.
Heart Beat
Parallel section that shows films where music is a fundamental element. This year Heart Beat celebrates musical diversity with 13 films never shown in Portugal. Among them, Martin Scorsese's most recent film about George Harrison. We will also present an homage to two excellent filmmakers that passed away this year: Richard Leacock, with Monterey Pop, and Thomaz Farkas, with Pixinguinha.
Retrospectives
Liberation movements in Mozambique, Angola, and Guinea-Bissau (1961-1974) Retrospective
50 years have passed since armed struggle in the portuguese colonies began. Doclisboa presents an original programme: an historical retrospective of the independence wars in the portuguese colonies in Africa. A collection of the most significant works ever made, shot close the liberation movements. Rare works that will surely provoke the viewer's reflection, surprise and emotion.
Jean Rouch Retrospective (in collaboration with the Cinemateca Portuguesa)
doclisboa presents an homage to Jean Rouch (1917-2004), filmmaker and etnographer, the greatest show of his films ever made in Portugal. His work, in constant renewal since the fifities when he first started filmimg in Africa, had a profound influence in modern cinema, including the Nouvelle Vague. This year's festival will present prints that the french «Centre National de la Cinématographie» has been restoring since 2008.
Harun Farocki Retrospective
Harun Farocki is one of the most acclaimed contemporary directors and also an artist and media theoric. The german director has a vast an profoundly politicized body of work in both video and film.
